“I’ve detected a stairwell east of your position,” Nine said. “There are also two elevators to the west, though both require security cards. How shall we proceed, Sergeant Riven?”

Despite how much Nine often annoyed me, I was unreasonably glad I had the AI to keep me company. Not being able to talk to anyone else was nerve-wracking. What if I was totally alone in a city I didn’t know? How would I get back to my squad, let alone Dios?

If Amber had successfully ejected the other pods like she’d ejected mine, my squad was likely safe and down in the city, but what about Caitlyn and Amber and Reese? They’d been stuck in a damaged plane that was obviously about to crash. People died in plane crashes.

Reese was in Hallowed armor, and Amber was Hallowed herself, so both might survive a crash. But Caitlyn? She wasn’t nearly as tough as any of us. I wasn’t sure if the thought of her being dead made me want to cry or simply punch my way through a wall.

If we had been lured out here either by Doctor Sharpe or the assholes on the Dios City Council, they’d just succeeded in assassinating the best chance Dios had to not become a shithole.

There was always a chance Amber had landed the plane without blowing it up, but I doubted even she could manage that. Yet even if they were all dead now, I still had goals.

First, find my squad. Then, find Captain Sato. Then, find Bishop and his team.

“We’re taking the stairs,” I told Nine. “Let me know if you hear anyone coming.”

If Caitlyn could speak from beyond the grave, of course, she’d tell me to move on. She’d remind me that killing the council would do nothing to bring her back or stabilize Dios, and would in fact make the city’s situation even more dire. She’d tell me to prioritize the good of the city over revenge.

Unfortunately for the city council, I wasn’t nearly as nice as Caitlyn. I still owed those bastards for spreading panacea through the city. So if they were behind this, I’d take care of them once and for all once we all got back to Dios.

Assuming I survived all this, of course.

I kicked the locked door to the stairs open and proceeded up. I didn’t know if the elevators would work for me, but I did know it would be a tight fit. The stairs were narrow as well, but they left me

the freedom to swing Savagery around without accidentally dropping myself down an elevator shaft.

Minutes ticked down on my HUD as midnight approached. I doubled my pace as I reached the upper floors. This building had to be forty stories, at least, and while I was in good shape, climbing stairs in heavy armor was never fun.

I was huffing hard by the time I finished the last flight, but the chance to punch the door open hard enough to knock it off its hinges reinvigorated me. I reached the open rooftop at one minute to midnight.
